EN LA EXPO DEL AGUA

Ban Ki-moon, Secretario General de la ONU dijo ayer en la EXPO de Zaragoza que 1000 millones de personas no tienen todavía acceso al agua potable y advirtió que los avances que en este sentido no son suficientes para alcanzar los objetivos del Milenio sobre agua y saneamiento.

“La Comunidad Internacional, los Gobiernos nacionales y el sector privado tienen mucho trabajo por hacer desde ahora hasta 2015, fecha acordada para alcanzar las metas del Milenio”, declaró.

Recordamos que una meta de los ODM es reducir a la mitad el porcentaje de personas sin acceso al agua.

Más de 2.600 millones de personas carecen de saneamiento adecuado y casi el 90% de las muertes producidas en el mundo por diarreas, segunda causa de mortalidad infantil, están relacionadas directamente con un déficit en el abastecimiento de agua y saneamiento. Paradójicamente, el coste que supondría la mejora de esta situación es reducido en comparación con sus beneficios ya que por cada euro invertido se pueden ahorrar hasta ocho en costos de salud y otros servicios básicos. Se calcula que con una inversión anual de unos siete mil millones de euros (menos del 1% de los gastos militares mundiales en 2005) podrían reducirse a la mitad para 2015 el número de personas sin acceso al agua.
